Originally from Nashville, Hendrix had attended Pearl High school and then two years at Fisk before moving to Detroit in the 1950s. While there he started the Carrie label, named after his mom, while working within the Motown orbit. Still maintaining his Nashville connections, he also licensed music back to Nashville via DJ John Richbourg's Rich Records label.

Along with Carrie, James Hendrix also started the record labels Ricare, La Beat, and LanRod, while also writing early material for Excello.

When Hendrix moved back to Nashville in 1967 he brought the label with him, eventually focusing almost exclusively on the gospel market. In the late '70s, Hendrix founded the Black Music Foundation, while continuing to run Carrie Records until its close in the late 1980s.
