The Red Tops
A mid-60s combo that included members from Overton and Glencliff high schools. They were a Discovery of the Week in June, 1966 and played at the Centennial Park bandshell, opening for Dottie West and Bill Carlisle. They later maintained a residency at Harvey's Loft in the fall of 1966.
A newspaper ad in The Tennessean on Saturday June 25, 1966, introduced them: "The Red Tops have appeared in numerous variety, talent and school shows. Concertgoers will hear them play "Tossing and Turning," "Wipeout" and "Long Tall Texan." "
After high school at Glencliff, drummer Louie Weaver enrolled at Trevecca Nazarene College, where he received a degree in percussion. Most notably, he would later join the Christian rock group Petra in the early 1980s, after a stint backing Randy Matthews, whose father was founding member of the Nashville-based Jordanaires vocal group. Weaver ran a drum institute for several years teaching percussion.
Earnie Hickerson graduated with a bachelors in Music from Furman and later got a masters degree in Music from LSU. After later receiving a JD from Nashville School of Law he workd in Metro Nashville District Attorney's office for over 20 years. He passed away in 2022.
